What did the doula do?

I’m a morning person, which means that my bedtime is usually by 11pm. For this reason I almost always miss out on watching late night shows. Last week my homegirl Sparkle sent me a link to clip of the Jimmy Kimmel show that aired the night before with guest actor Taye Diggs. Sparkle’s note stated that “don't let the privileged have all the resources to themselves. a doula for every family, y'all...”

Abortion Doulas

This past week, I had the extraordinary opportunity to witness an abortion doula at work.

We were performing a 12 week termination on a woman who had a fetal demise. The woman was teary before the procedure and definitely nervous. The abortion doula sat with her while she received her counseling, while her IV was placed, and while she waited for the procedure room to become available.

Doulas Step Up to Comfort NYC Abortion Patients

NEW YORK (WOMENSENEWS)--One woman was so nervous during her abortion that her sweat soaked through her paper gown.

A second apologized repeatedly for not being ready to have a child.

A third sobbed quietly because she was forced to terminate her pregnancy due to health complications.

During the two years that Lauren Mitchell has attended to the needs of women undergoing abortions, these three patients are among the hundreds she has served.

Birth Story

Dear Helen,

While you were being born, I was your Mommy’s doula.  I wanted to write you this letter about your birth because it was so amazing.  The most wonderful part of your birth was the overpowering love everyone felt upon your arrival.  You are a lucky, lucky girl.

You were due to arrive on February 14th, but it all started five days later, on Friday, February 19th. Your Mommy went to see her midwife for a check-up.  Thankfully, the midwife said that you and your Mommy were both very healthy.  However, the midwife noticed that the fluid you were floating in was a little low.  This was a sign that it was definitely time for you to come!  The midwife told your Mommy to stay at the hospital so the doctors could help bring you into the world.  Around 3:00 in the afternoon, your Mommy called me to tell me all that was going on, and I got so excited!  I told her I was going to get ready and would be on my way to her soon.
